Investigate the World
During my freshman year in Biology I was put into a group and given the task to research and present a certain virus in order to learn more about pathogens. Pathogens are a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause diseases. Our group chose to do the the pathogen, Hantavirus. We learned about what exactly the Hantavirus' is, its origins, and its reproduction cycle. We then chose a disease that the Hantvirus may cause, which was Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. HPS is a rare respatory disease that can be fatal, but treatable. What was surprising to learn was that Social and Cultural Factors take part in the spread of any disease not just HPS. Through researching pathogens we became more aware of viruses in the world and what we may do to stop them.
